BATON ROUGE - The Baton Rouge Police Department says a child was shot by his younger brother after their father left them unattended in a car with a fully loaded handgun.

The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon in a parking lot in the 1700 block of Marque Ann Drive around 4:15 p.m. Authorities say an 8-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot was brought to Baton Rouge General Mid City via a private vehicle. That hospital no longer has an emergency room, and EMS were called to transport the child to another medical center.

The boy was shot by his 2-year-old brother, according to police. The boy sustained an injury to the upper arm. The child is expected to recover, according to police.

The investigation remains ongoing. Check back for updates.
