Officer meets woman who saved his life
BATON ROUGE - Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome held a press conference Monday to thank the 56-year-old woman who saved a Baton Rouge police officer from an attacker.
Vickie Williams-Tillman stepped in after an arrest went awry Sunday morning. BRPD says Thomas Bennett had the officer on the ground and was grabbing the officer's gun when Williams-Tillman jumped on the attacker's back.
According to BRPD, Williams-Tillman gave the officer time to recover and restrain Bennett.
During the conference, Williams-Tillman said she doesn't usually travel through that area, but she's grateful she did Sunday.
"I just want to say I'm so glad that he's here... I know God led me in that direction when I left my home," Williams-Tillman said.
Police Chief Carl Dabadie said BRPD doesn't normally advocate citizens getting involved in altercations, but it worked out for the best in this case.
Bennett was booked on charges of aggravated battery, disarming a police officer, resisting an officer with violence, possession of cocaine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to arrest records, bond has been set for $167,500.
