BATON ROUGE - Following a public records request filed by the WBRZ Investigative Unit early after the officer-involved shooting death of Alton Sterling, the City of Baton Rouge made internal affairs records of the two officers involved available for review.

Chief Investigator Chris Nakamoto got the first look at the records Thursday morning. Preliminary records research shows both officers, Howie Lake and Blane Salamoni, have been investigated for use of force - meaning anything from a physical encounter to firing officer-issued duty weapons.

In 2012, Salamoni was cautioned for damaging department equipment in an incident unrelated to use of force. The caution was part of Salamoni's disciplinary history, which is public record since he is a police officer for city government. In August 2015, Salamoni was involved in a "physical altercation" while trying to arrest a person. Salamoni reported the person he was trying to apprehend tried to take his taser. That person then needed stitches to close a head injury. In that situation, Police Chief Carl Dabadie decided the complaint was not sustained, so there was no disciplinary action.

Lake has two use of force incidents - including the December 2014 shooting of Kevin Knight. Knight survived the shooting and was arrested. Lake was cleared of any wrongdoing in both.

The WBRZ Investigative Unit is still sifting through the records. This story will be updated with additional details as they become available.
