Mother accused of abuse, cruelty to 9 kids
BATON ROUGE - Police arrested a Baton Rouge woman after officers said she abused one of her nine children and forced them to sleep together in one room with no beds.
Officers charged 27-year-old Leticia Brothers Saturday with abuse, cruelty to juveniles, criminal neglect and encouraging neglect or delinquency in children.
BRPD said they were called to a home on La Margie Avenue for a child abuse complaint. When the officer arrived they said they found a 9-year-old girl with a knot on the side of her forehead. Police said the girl told them her mother had "whooped" her and pushed her head against something while also pulling the girl's hair.
Police said the home was also sparsely furnished with only a pair of couches, no beds, and "minimal food" in the refrigerator and pantry. The officer said they were told all nine children and Brothers slept huddled in the same room together.
Police said Brothers told them she had disciplined her child, and that she was in the process of getting child support collected. The officer contacted the Department of Children and Family Services, who said the living conditions weren't adequate for the family and that the wound on the girl's head was consistent with abuse.
