Traffic officials closed the road around 1:20 p.m. near mile marker 127.6 and the Whiskey Bay exit. At 3 p.m. Louisiana State Police expected the closure to continue into the late evening hours. The road was reopened at 10 p.m.
Drivers stuck on I-10 were diverted onto LA 415 to US 190. LSP reports that troopers are posted on US 190 to assist with traffic flow. Police say drivers should expect heavy delays and should avoid the area completely if possible.
Photos from the scene showed a large fire engulfing an 18-wheeler. LSP spokesperson Bryan Lee confirmed that the truck was carrying Pepto-Bismol.
Details on the crash are still limited at this time. Stay tuned to WBRZ News 2 online and on Facebook and Twitter for updates as more information becomes available.
Not a single vehicle westbound on Atchafalaya Bridge i10, mm123. Eastbound backed way up, hopefully not rubberneckers at front. @WBRZ pic.twitter.com/MyreQUCgAn
