GONZALES - A St. Amant High School senior was stabbed to death today by another teenager.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said the victim, 18-year-old Todd Toups Jr., was visiting a friend he was planning to go to the high school's homecoming dance with at Cobb's Trailer Park on Roddy Road.

Toups and a 16-year-old suspect got into a fight and Toups was stabbed.

Deputies say the suspect used to go to school at St. Amant, but recently transferred to Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge.

Toups went to the hospital in critical condition, and later died from his injuries.

"Our hearts are heavy tonight as we learn of the death of St. Amant High School senior Todd 'T.J.' Toups, Jr.  We are keeping his family, friends, and the entire St. Amant community in our thoughts and prayers.  Counselors will be made available to students and staff during the fall break holiday and when they return to school next week to help cope with this tragedy," said Patrice Pujol, the School Superintendent of Ascension Parish.

The juvenile was arrested and charged with second-degree murder
