In a press conference last week, Edwards announced the repairs are expected to be completed in January 2019, saying crews will be working 24/7 to finish the job as soon as possible. The news came moments after Edwards completed a tour of the damage at the bridge.
The Sunshine Bridge has been closed to traffic since it sustained damage from a barge collision more than a week ago. The Department of Transportation and Development has been authorized to spend up to $5 million over the course of the repair process.
Additionally, the governor says the state is pursuing a claim against Marquette Transportation, the company responsible for the accident. It was later revealed the company had been at the center of another similar incident involving the Gross Tete Bridge in 2014.
