Firefighters battle two-alarm fire at vacant magnet school
BATON ROUGE – Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at Brookstown Middle Magnet Academy in Baton Rouge Friday afternoon.
The school is located in the 4000 block of E Brookstown Drive in Baton Rouge. The school has been vacant and closed since the August flood. No students were inside at the time of the fire.
According to Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesperson Curt Monte, firefighters were checking equipment in the Station 4 back lot when they noticed the fire at the school. The fire was contained to the school gym where the school was storing some furniture and equipment.
Monte estimates the fire caused $495,000 in damages to the school's structure and contents.
Parish officials say no one was working on the campus at the time of the fire. It is unclear what effect the fire will have on rebuilding the school.
