DENHAM SPRINGS - The city council approved the mayor's request to fire Police Chief Scott Jones.

The firing came during a heavily-attended special council meeting Thursday afternoon. WBRZ reporter Brett Buffington reported from inside the standing-room only council room where Jones was fired shortly after 5 p.m.

Jones has been on leave since early February while an internal investigation was conducted into how the Denham Springs Police Department handled a domestic violence call involving a city councilman. With Jones, Captain Steve Kistler was also fired, though there was no discussion about him in Thursday's meeting.

In February, councilman Chris Davis was arrested following an incident that happened in January at a home on Oakwood Drive. The councilman faces a misdemeanor count of first-offense domestic abuse battery. The initial report written by the Denham Springs Police Department states that an incident involving Chris Davis happened at the Oakwood Drive home on January 15. However, details of what happened that day were not released by the District Attorney's Office, since the case is still open.

At the council meeting, the mayor said the case involving Davis was not handled correctly.
