5 officers and 1 suspect dead at Dallas protest shooting
DALLAS, TX - 12 police officers and 2 civilians were shot by 2 snipers in downtown Dallas during a protest, Dallas Police Department Chief David Brown says.
5 of those officers have died. One of the suspect was shot and killed himself. The civilians are expected to survive.
Dallas Police Chief David Brown says three people are in custody after snipers opened fire on police officers during protests. Brown said at an early Friday morning news conference that authorities are negotiating with a suspect in a downtown parking garage who has been exchanging gunfire with officials.
Several hundred people gathered at Belo Garden Park in Dallas, marching to the Old Red Courthouse near Main and Market streets to protest over two recent fatal police shootings of black men. The rally ended there when shots were heard around 9:00 p.m.
Police are asking city officials to rewind downtown cameras to look for potential suspects. They say the suspect or suspects may have gotten out of a Suburban during the protest.
Brown says authorities are not certain all suspects have been located.
A Dallas Area Rapid Transit has identified one of its officers was fatally shot during the attack.
