BATON ROUGE - Thousands of students have recently graduated from local universities.
But instead of celebrating, students are one college are preparing for their campus to close its doors forever.
Virginia College announced the closure of all of its branches on December 5. That shutdown includes the campus at the Cortana Mall. After a couple of weeks of transition, today is the final day of classes with the doors officially shutting tomorrow. Shreveport's Virginia College campus closed last week.
The closure is being blamed on the loss of suspension of the school's accreditation and added requirements by the U.S. Department of Education. In a letter to the branches, Virginia College's parent company said the additional requirements made it difficult to acquire resources needed to operate.
The parent company informed employees that wages and accrued, unused vacation time would be paid through the current term.
With the departure of the college, the focus turns to the decline of the Cortana Mall. Only one main anchor store remains, with a few small businesses scattered throughout the property. This latest move has local leaders worried.
