Proposed law could pose problem for movement of Baton Rouge Zoo

BATON ROUGE - New legislation has been proposed that would halt the movement of the Baton Rouge Zoo.
The bill proposed by Representative Barbara Carpenter would prohibit BREC from acquiring, leasing, developing, operating, or managing any property or facility for the purpose of collecting wild animals for study unless the property is located within its current area of operation.
Early this year, BREC hired an engineering group to study a piece of land that could be the future home of the Baton Rouge Zoo. According to BREC, Duplantis Design Group was hired to do preliminary feasibility analysis of the Airline Highway Park.
There will be a series of rallies held by those who wish to keep the zoo at the Greenwood Park. The first rally was held Thursday at the Zachary Branch Library at 6 p.m.
