Gun sales remain constant after mass shooting

PORT ALLEN - One gun store owner said gun sales won't spike unless the federal government tries to enact stricter controls.

Scott Roe owns Spillway Sportsman in Port Allen. He and other gun dealers in the capital region say there's been no increase in area gun sales since Wednesday's mass shooting in California.

Roe said there was a sales spike in the aftermath of the 2012 Newtown, Connecticut shooting spree when some federal lawmakers talked about banning AR-15 rifles.

"It pushes people to say: well if you're going to ban it, I'm going to buy it before they ban it," said Roe.

Gun sales tend to increase during in the fall and winter as people buy them for Christmas presents and hunting season.

Roe said the mass shooting in California will most likely not cause people to buy guns for protection because it happened so far away from Louisiana.

He said there was a small increase in sales after the Lafayette movie theater shooting in July.
