BATON ROUGE — Major changes are being made to the Towne Center shopping and dining district.
Customers entering District Donuts on Thursday were greeted with a sign announcing the store will close its doors March 15.
"Oh my goodness, I don't believe this. My heart is broken," regular customer Victoria Montgomery said. "I work at the dental office right over there, and I love to come sit outside on beautiful days. It breaks my heart."
The decision was made earlier this week.
"Really just some circumstances outside of our control, making smart business decisions, we decided to close our Baton Rouge location," store leader Les Jackson said.
It's all part of a major revamp for the shopping center.
Towne Center officials tell WBRZ that Zea Rotisserie & Bar will move to the building where Bonefish Grill formerly was.
That's not all — the building where Books-A-Million once was is set to be torn down. Apartments will rise in its place.
"Towne Center is going to be doing some upgrades throughout all of Towne Center, just some moves going on," Jackson said.
Regulars like Victoria Montgomery are heartbroken.
"I mean, I guess I have to find somewhere else to sit outside because it's such a good energy. I love the coffee, and it breaks my heart," Montgomery said.
Construction is expected to begin in the fall.
