Denham Springs discusses home elevation requirements

DENHAM SPRINGS - Livingston Parish residents attempted to get answers concerning how to begin the rebuilding process at a community meeting Saturday.

Many of the residents were looking to find out whether home elevation would be necessary or required.

"This is a question that's going to have to be answered at the federal level," Denham Springs Mayor Gerard Landry said. "That's why I reached out to our U.S. senators and congressmen as early as I did."

Paul Wesley attended the town hall meeting. His home is included in the 90 percent of Denham Springs homes that were damaged by flood waters. Wesley says he did not have flood insurance.

"We need help, and we need help now," Wesley said.

Wesley says his biggest problem is not knowing if, or how much he was have to elevate his home before he can start major renovations.

"If this FEMA regulation is in affect," he says, "us having to raise our house 6 feet to rebuild them would undo any help we can get from anybody. We wouldn't be able to rebuild them. We need some so we can rebuild out where they are."

FEMA has yet to set a requirement on any possible elevation requirement. The mayor says it could be a year or more before a decision is made.
