Clinton focuses on health care at rally

BATON ROUGE - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton vowed in Baton Rouge to defend President Barack Obama's health care reforms if she's elected to the White House.

Clinton stopped in Baton Rouge to speak to volunteers helping organize the campaign in the area ahead of the state's primary election on March 5. She told the crowd of 1,200 people at the Louisiana Leadership Institute that she was not going to let Republicans "them tear up that law."

Clinton took shots at Governor Bobby Jindal during her stop, saying his refusal to accept Medicaid hurt working families in Louisiana. Jindal has made repealing Obama's health care reforms and replacing them with his own ideas a central part of his platform.

State Rep. Paul Hallis, R-Mandeville, said after the rally that Louisiana Republicans still hold repealing Obamacare as the best option. The Republican National Committee also sent out a statement trying to draw attention back to investigations of government emails Clinton kept on a private server at her home while she was Secretary of State.

Clinton is also expected to attend a private fundraiser while she's in Baton Rouge and is scheduled to speak to a similar gathering in Little Rock, Ark., later today. The last time Clinton was in Louisiana was November 2014, when she was campaigning for former Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu in New Orleans.

A new CNN / ORC International poll conducted last week shows Clinton still leading in the Democratic pool of possible presidential candidates. The poll puts Clinton's support at 42 percent, with Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont at 24 percent and Vice President Joe Biden at 22 percent.
