Walter Daniels III re-elected mayor of Amite in balloting Saturday; tax issues enjoy wide support
AMITE – Democrat Walter Daniels III was re-elected mayor of Amite on Saturday, winning a runoff against Republican Damon Ellzey. Maria Coleman, a Democrat, was elected to the Town Council.
Daniels and Ellzey had advanced to the runoff after a four-person primary.
A pair of fire protection proposals were enjoying broad support throughout Tangipahoa Parish. Fire Protection District No. 1 successfully extended a half-cent sales tax and 20 mills’ worth of property taxes into a recently annexed area, winning by a 10-1 margin.
Ten votes had separated the three candidates for a council seat in Amite. Coleman finished first, eight votes ahead of Michael Griffin. Tesza Harrell was two votes behind and missed the runoff. In balloting Saturday, Coleman won 118-68, according to complete but unofficial results.

With the bulk of precincts reporting, voters in Rural Fire Protection District No. 2 were poised to approve a 10-mill renewal, and voters appeared headed toward approval of a 15-mill renewal in Recreation District No. 39A in the Amite and Independence area.
