SUBR's Devon Gales coming home in coming weeks
BATON ROUGE - Southern University's Devon Gales is getting ready to return home to Louisiana on Feb. 24. Right now, he's still undergoing physical therapy at the Shepard Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Southern wide receiver was injured during a football game in September against the Georgia Bulldogs, suffering a spinal injury that caused him to be rushed to a hospital in Athens. He was then moved to the Shepard Center to begin recovery.
News 2's Jessica LeBlanc spoke with him on Friday morning, and Gales talked about how he felt when he experienced sensations in his legs for the first time.
"It felt like the Lord was giving me a chance at walking again. Little by little," said Gales.
His workouts are consistent.
"The workouts start as soon as I wake up. I have to put my own clothes on and it's way more difficult than usual. And then going to therapy, I have to work a 9 to 5 shift," Gales said.
When asked if he believed he would walk again, he replied affirmatively and with confidence.
"Oh yes, I'm going to walk, in just a matter of time," said Gales.
