BATON ROUGE - Former LSU player and coach Mel Didier died Sunday night in Phoenix, Ariz., according to the LSU Athletic Department. He was 91 years old.

Didier was a former baseball and football letterman at LSU. He was also an assistant coach for LSU football, and was a longtime Major League Baseball executive, according to LSU Athletics.

Didier was employed by the Toronto Blue Jays as a special assignments scout at the time of his death, LSU Athletics said.

A Marksville, La. native, Didier was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. He was a student and athlete at Catholic High before moving on to the LSU football and baseball teams in the mid-1940s.

After his junior year at LSU, Didier signed with the Detroit Tigers as a pitcher. His professional career was cut short due to an arm injury after two seasons in the minor leagues.

Didier then returned to Catholic High where he was an assistant coach for both football and baseball. He coached the team to the state baseball championship in 1953.

Didier coached the LSU freshman football team in 1967 and 1968, leading the teams to two consecutive undefeated seasons. He then took over the position as varsity defensive coach prior to LSU's 31-27 victory in the inaugural Peach Bowl over Flordia State.

He moved on from LSU in 1969 to become director of scouting and player development with the Montreal Expos. This began his successful career with several MLB organizations.

Didier also helped the Los Angeles Dodgers to their 1988 World Series title.

Didier's son, Bob, was a catcher in the Major Leagues from 1969-74 with the Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox. His grandson, Beau, played baseball at LSU from 2009-12.
