BATON ROUGE - Candidates, their family members, and a few protesters showed up to the Secretary of State's office Tuesday as qualifications for the fall elections began.

The top races in Louisiana include the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, treasurer and insurance commissioner. Candidates for the eight Board of Elementary and Secondary Education seats must also fill out their paperwork and pay the sign-up fee.

Many candidates were joined by their spouses. Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle carried his grandkids into the office as he qualified for the governor's race.

David Vitter and his wife Wendy were joined by a group of college-age supporters carrying signs. Another person showed up wearing a diaper and carrying a sign which read "I (heart) Diaper Dave." The protester, who was referring to a scandal where Vitter's name appeared on a Washington D. C. escort service's list of clients, only said his name was "Brian."

In 2007 Vitter admitted to using the escort service and apologized; he was re-elected to the Senate. The madam who was convicted of running the service, Deborah Jean Palfrey, later committed suicide.

Other protesters at the qualifications included beret-wearing women with signs that said lieutenant governor and gubernatorial candidate Jay Dardenne went on a taxpayer-funded vacation in France. Luke Bolar, the communications director for David Vitter, confirmed those protesters were Vitter campaign volunteers.

Dardenne's wife Cathy told the protesters she thought their signs, which were made up to look like passports, were "cute."

You can find an updated list of qualified candidates for each of the races on the Secretary of State's website.
