BATON ROUGE - A former BRPD officer was shot to death on April 26 while attempting to fight off a burglar. Authorities announced on Wednesday, Aug. 5, the suspect involved in the killing has been charged.

Police say the former BRPD officer, 41-year-old Ryan Hord, was shot around 11:45 p.m. on Richland Avenue, between Government Street and North Boulevard on April 26, 2020.

Officials say Hord exchanged gunfire with a 29-year-old, later identified as Craig Willis, who lives nearby on St. Rose Avenue.

Hord, who started working for BRPD back in August of 2009, died on the scene.

Willis was wounded in the exchange and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

On August 5, Willis was indicted on second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies, and simple burglary.
