Middle school student arrested in Livingston Parish after reportedly bringing handgun to school
DENHAM SPRINGS - Law enforcement arrested a student Wednesday morning who reportedly brought a handgun to Live Oak Junior High, the school system said.
Sheriff Jason Ard said they are still investigating the student's motive so no charges have been filed.
"There's a lot of rumors out there. Right now she wasn't there to harm anyone, but that's hard to believe because it's a handgun on campus. I'm sure there was a motive for something, but we're trying to work through all that right now," said Ard.
The school system sent a note to parents emphasizing no students were injured and the only disruption to the other students' schedule was a brief lockdown.
Sheriff Ard said that his agency and the school took swift action in preventing any potential tragedy.
"I mean look when you get information like that and you're able to get to that person and actually not only get there but identify and secure a weapon as quick as they did and nobody got hurt - hats off to them," said Ard. "Would I have like to see this gun never make it to school? Yes, but unfortunately it did. I'm just glad the outcome was what it was."
The school system said officials received a tip about the weapon on campus around 7:55 a.m. and the student was taken into custody and the firearm was removed within five minutes.
The student did not threaten any other students or faculty members.
