BATON ROUGE – A group of volunteer boaters who have been dubbed "The Cajun Navy" are taking their boats onto the streets to help evacuate people from homes, WWLTV reports.

Dwayne Pack said he and his friend Jeremy Freeman have been going on social media to find people who need help.

"People posting on Facebook that they're stranded and needing people with boats," Pack said.

The Cajun Navy has been getting people out of their homes since Saturday.

"The people here work hard for what they got," Pack said. "To see them lose it because of this...it's hard."

Floodwaters were receding in many parts of south Louisiana on Tuesday, though they were continuing to rise in other areas as the water drained south.

Emergency responders spread throughout East Baton Rouge Parish Tuesday to check on residents. They ask that the community remain aware that first responders will be operating in all areas throughout the week.

Tuesday morning, volunteers rescued nine cats from a home in Sorrento. WBRZ's Earl Phelps was live on air when first responders arrived at the home.

The cat owner's daughter called WBRZ from Fayetteville, North Carolina Tuesday afternoon to say that no one had been able to contact her mother in Sorrento. One of the daughter's friends saw the cats being rescued live and was able to see that the mother was safe.

Since the broadcast, the daughter reports that the family has been in contact with the mother.
