BATON ROUGE- The state says that it will build a new bridge since LA 1 over the Intracoastal Canal is the worst in the state, according to officials.

Traffic is currently a huge problem drivers have to endure in the area.

" Well they (drivers) would just like to be able to cross in a reasonable amount of time, I feel, you know nobody wants to sit in traffic for a half hour to go two miles you know," driver Mike Weimer said.

However, the state says that repairing the bridge is not an option because it is not worth the money.

Construction on the new bridge will not start for another four years, however the $100 million project could greatly improve the traffic.

The new bridge will have three lanes in each direction, and the northbound side will have one lane specifically for those entering I-10. It will include a metal guardrail that will separate LA 1 and interstate commuters.

" I do believe the overall outcome will outweigh the little bit of headache we will receive at that time, because we already receive ample enough aggravation," driver Monica McGee said,

According to state officials, the bidding process for construction of the bridge will start in July 2020.
