EAGLE PASS, Texas – Oscar Lozada has been taken into custody and is awaiting extradition to Louisiana, WBRZ learned Friday.

Lozada is charged with murder related to the death of his wife, Sylviane, in July 2011.

Sylviane Lozada is presumed dead, although her remains have never been found. In an arrest warrant filed for her husband Thursday in Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s detectives said Oscar Lozada killed his wife. The couple had a history of domestic abuse, family friends told WBRZ.

The arrest warrant describes a bloody crime scene. Oscar Lozada purchased bags of concrete and buckets with locking lids before his wife disappeared, leading to suspicions that her remains may have been dismembered and dumped somewhere.

Oscar Lozada’s arrest – and the filing of the warrant – are the biggest breaks in the seven-year-old case for the sheriff’s office who, sources said, has quietly pursued the case with a devoted detective who made it his mission over the years to close the investigation.

When Sylviane Lozada vanished, her husband left the country with their young daughter. Then, it was believed that he fled to Venezuela. But, Oscar Lozada was arrested in Mexico and booked as a fugitive in the United States late Thursday. Simultaneously, sheriff’s deputies were able to recover his daughter who is now back in Baton Rouge, WBRZ has learned.

It was not immediately clear how or why Oscar Lozada moved from South America to Mexico.

Sylviane Lozada’s disappearance sparked massive search efforts near her south Baton Rouge home in and around the upscale neighborhood where the family lived.

Sources told WBRZ Friday, Sylviane Lozada’s family from Europe is traveling to Baton Rouge to be with the child – now nearly a teenager – and there are plans for a custody hearing.

Eventually, Oscar Lozada will be booked into jail in East Baton Rouge Parish.

The sheriff in Eagle Pass, Texas, where Lozada was booked said his agency has a good relationship with Mexican authorities and the partnership likely helped Louisiana deputies orchestrate an arrest.
