Infant, parents killed in Baton Rouge crash
BATON ROUGE – Police say the two-month-old baby that was fighting for his life after a car crash killed both of his parents Saturday morning has died.
Louisiana State Police said, 20-year-old Joshua Euguene Claverie and 22-year-old Jayla Sharnikiya Danielle Young Claverie were killed when their Ford pickup truck crashed into a Freightliner Box truck on I-10 near Bluebonnet Blvd shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday.
Troopers say the driver of the box truck, 56-year-old Christopher L. Stewart had pulled onto westbound shoulder to use his cell phone. After making the call, police say he tried to reenter the right lane when the pickup crashed into the rear of the box truck.
Investigators are still trying to determine why the pickup truck was unable to avoid the Freightliner.
According to State Police, Jayla Young was pronounced dead at the scene. Claverie and the baby were brought to a local hospital where they both later died.
Troopers said the driver of the box truck was also wearing his seatbelt and only suffered minor injuries.
Alcohol does not appear to be the cause of the crash.
