BATON ROUGE - An 18-year-old died in the hospital after he was beaten while trying to calm a drunken man who was picking fights outside a Baton Rouge club, according to police.

The coroner's office said Hayes Sellers passed away Sunday, a week after he was rushed to a hospital in critical condition on May 8. His death was ruled a homicide as a result of blunt-force injuries to his head.

According to arrest documents, the confrontation broke out around 2 a.m. as people were leaving a nearby club. Investigators said one of the two suspects, 21-year-old Jayce Lambert, was drunk and "trying to fight every person that he came in contact with."

Lambert allegedly got into an argument with a woman in a nearby parking lot, despite onlookers—including his own friends—telling him to stop. Sellers reportedly stepped in to defuse the situation, causing Lambert to turn his attention toward him.

"Sellers was not trying to engage in a fight and was only trying to protect the female," police wrote in their report.

A second aggressor, 20-year-old Edmond Revelle, then stepped out of a car and allegedly punched Sellers in the face, knocking him unconscious and causing Sellers to strike his head on concrete.

Both suspects left the scene without rendering aid or calling for help.

Revelle was arrested last week for second-degree battery and later released on bond. Police said Wednesday Revelle was re-booked for second-degree murder.

Lambert was arrested Tuesday as a principal to second-degree murder.

Bonds for both men have been set at $175,000 each.
