BATON ROUGE - Veteran news anchor John Mahaffey died Friday morning. He was 77.

Mahaffey is remembered as one of the most popular faces of television in Baton Rouge, leading the WBRZ news team during the Golden Years of TV – from the 1970s until he retired in May 1999. Prior to working at Channel 2, Mahaffey worked as a studio cameraman in Texas and also had stints as a technical director, film director and marketing manager.

Mahaffey was also well-known for his "The Final Note" segment at the end of each newscast.

"He gave the folks a chance to come away with a real good feeling," News 2 Meteorologist Pat Shingleton. "He held the viewers in after weather and sports. They wanted to see Mahaffey's final note."

Friday night at 10, Pat bid an emotional fairway to his friend with one final, Final Note.
