BATON ROUGE - Two of four people indicted in the death of their elderly family member have pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges.

Carlnessa Butler, 22, and Chasity Lewis, 36, were both arraigned in an East Baton Rouge court Thursday, where they made their pleas. Both were arrested for manslaughter in the death of Barbara Lewis-Brown earlier this year.

In July, the 77-year-old was found on the sofa of an apartment that was in "deplorable condition," according to investigators. She was found suffering from severe bedsores, among other medical problems. Paramedics took her to a local hospital where she later died.

Lewis and Butler were arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison immediately following the death. The victim's son, 56-year-old Carl Lewis, was also arrested in August. A fourth suspect Chira Lewis, was arrested in September.

All four suspects were formally charged last month.
