FEMA to award additional $5 million for flood recovery
BATON ROUGE — To help replace emergency vehicles, remove flood debris and repair schools damaged during the 2016 flood, FEMA will be awarding more than $5 million in disaster funding.
Federal funding will be reimbursed through FEMA’s Public Assistance program.
More than $3.5 million for debris removal has been approved by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development for Ascension, Assumption, East and West Baton Rouge, East and West Feliciana, Iberville, Point Coupee and St. James parishes.
Denham Springs Fire Department has been approved for nearly $900,000 to replace fire trucks and response equipment. Denham Springs has been approved for more than $170,000 for its response to the flood.
More than $92 million total has been approved for schools. Hammond High Magnet School has been approved for around $600,000 for the cleaning and removal of flood damage. The funding will reimburse for damaged equipment and repairs to classrooms, the cafeteria, gym and more. FEMA typically reimburses 75 percent of eligible expenses.

However, the agency will reimburse applicants 90 percent of eligible expenses given the magnitude of the August 2016 floods.
