CLINTON - Police say a middle school teacher was arrested Wednesday after a parent complained that he was sending inappropriate messages to a student’s cell phone.

Clinton Police say Louis N. Smith, Jr. was charged with indecent behavior with a juvenile, computer aided solicitation of a minor and prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and student.

Police say Smith was a teacher at East Feliciana Middle School and was taken into custody after leaving a school board office around 10:15 a.m.

Detectives say they're currently investigating to see if other students are involved. More charges are possible.

East Feliciana Parish Superintendent of Schools Carlos Sam said the school system is cooperating with local police on the investigation. Sam said the school system took immediate action to place Smith on leave as soon as it learned of the allegations so that a "full" and "thorough" investigation can take place.

Investigators say they'll actively work to find out if other students may have had potentially problematic encounters with the teacher.

"We don't know if there are others," Sam said early Wednesday afternoon.
