Body cam footage shows officers shoot man holding two knives
NEW YORK- Police released body camera footage Monday that shows the shooting of an apparently suicidal man during an encounter last month.
The Manhattan District Attorney's Office agreed to release footage of a man who came at the officers while holding two knives after they were called to his apartment in Hamilton Heights.
The encounter occurred on Oct. 22 when officers were responding to a call about an emotionally disturbed man who had become suicidal. The officers knocked at the apartment door and saw the man with two knives, police said. After repeated commands, the footage shows an officer firing once, striking the man in the leg.
"The police officers immediately began performing first aid and called for an ambulance," Assistant Chief Rodney Harrison said at the time.
The 27-year-old man was hospitalized with a non-life threatening injury.
