ST. TAMMANY PARISH - Hazardous materials teams and fire department officials are on the scene of an ammonia leak at Diversified Foods near Goodbee in St. Tammany Parish.

WWL-TV reports that I-12 has been shut down in both directions between La 445 at exit 47 and La 1077 at exit 57. Alternate routes include US Hwy 190 and La 22.

State Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta asked people to avoid the area via his Facebook page.

According to WWL-TV, several residents near the area have contacted the station to report a strong odor in the area. The incident happened around 9 a.m. Friday.

The plant has been evacuated along with a nearby Budweiser facility. State Police say the situation is still under evaluation and no further evacuation of nearby areas has been ordered at this time.

Further details about the incident were not immediately available at the time. The company was not immediately available to comment.

State Police, the Department of Environmental Quality, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, and St. Tammany Fire Districts 4 and 13 are at the site on Louisiana Highway 1085 just north of Interstate 12.

Trooper Dustin Dwight said there are no injuries reported in connection with the evacuation. He also could not provide an estimate as to how long the interstate would be closed.

All lanes re-opened in time for the evening rush.
