MORGANZA - Two people were killed inside of an ambulance — including a pregnant emergency responder — after the vehicle collided head-on with a semi-truck in Pointe Coupee Parish late Tuesday morning.

According to the Pointe Coupee Sheriff's Office, the crash happened on LA-1 at Deaton Lane. Authorities told WBRZ that those killed were the driver of the ambulance, Kymber Nezat, and a patient, Albert Bordelon, who was in the back of the vehicle.

State Police said Nezat was driving the ambulance when she hit the car in front of her, crossed the center line into the oncoming lane, and hit the semi-truck head-on.

Three others were hurt: a second employee inside the ambulance, the semi-truck driver, and another person in a third vehicle.

Nezat was pregnant at the time of the crash, according to the U.S. First Responders Association, a nonprofit network of firefighters, paramedics and other emergency personnel.

Acadian Ambulance released the following statement Tuesday afternoon.

Acadian Ambulance can confirm that one of our ambulances was involved in a vehicle accident this morning. There were two fatalities. We are cooperating with the law enforcement officials investigating the scene and have no other information to release at this time.

The entire Acadian family extends our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and of the injured.

Paramedic Hunter Fruge was injured in the accident and was listed in critical but stable condition.

A blood drive will be held at Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and in Ascension from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., both on Wednesday.
