INDEPENDENCE — One person was killed and five were hurt after a car driven by a suspected drunk driver ran off the road, hit a tree and flipped in Independence. 

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office said 23-year-old Marisol Carcamo Vargas was killed in the wreck that happened Saturday around 6 p.m. along North Larussa Lane. Five other people in the car were injured. 

Deputies said Antonio Reyes Carcamo was driving the vehicle and lost control while making a left turn. The car went off the shoulder, into a tree and flipped over.

The driver was taken to a hospital after the crash. Upon his release, deputies arrested him for vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated and reckless operation of a vehicle.
