BATON ROUGE - One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a crash that happened late Tuesday night on I-110.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said the crash happened shortly before 10 p.m. A 2003 Honda was driving on I-110 when the front left tire seemingly became locked due to a mechanical malfunction. The Honda struck the concrete barrier, sliding on top of it before it hit a concrete pole and caught fire.

Bystanders were able to rescue a 19-year-old woman from the vehicle, but a 19-year-old man, Donovan Burton, was unable to be rescued and died at the scene.

Burton was a student at Southern University majoring in agricultural sciences. The university said the injured person was also a student. She sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital.

The university extended its condolences to Burton's family and friends in a statement.

"At this time, there are no University- or student-planned memorials. We will keep you posted on anything that we are made aware of," Southern said in a statement Thursday.

The crash is still under investigation.
