DALLAS - The Garrett Nussmeier era is underway at LSU.

The redshirt junior quarterback will be first on the depth chart this fall for the Tigers, replacing 2023 Heisman winner Jayden Daniels.

Nussmeier’s only career start came in the Reliaquest Bowl on New Year’s Day, where he threw for 395 yards and three touchdowns.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly has seen Nussmeier take control of the offense since being thrust into the QB1 role, comparing Nussmeier’s attitude to owning a car.

“It's (The offense) kind of like a rental, right? You don't care if you ding it up or, you know, you get a dent here, well, maybe you guys do, you're not as careful I guess,” said Kelly. “But when you own the car, I mean, there's a sense of pride, you're very thoughtful, and everything you do and you can see that transformation with Garrett and everything that he does, in terms of he's waited for this opportunity to drive this car, and nobody, nobody is going to mess with it. I mean, not one player is going to take away the opportunity for it to be successful.”

“Coach always has the best analogies, that’s why he’s so good at what he does. But, I mean, yeah, I guess you could say that, you know, I feel like, you know, we've grown as a team, not just you know about me stepping up, but everybody you know how we came together as a unit,” Nussmeier said. “It started in the bowl game, and into spring ball,  and now coming up on fall camp.”

Nussmeier will make his second career start when LSU opens its season in Las Vegas against USC on September 1.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Two LSU pitchers were drafted by one of the biggest franchises in sports Monday afternoon.

Thatcher Hurd (RHP) was selected in the third round (89th overall pick) of the MLB Draft Monday afternoon by the New York Yankees.

Hurd was 11-6 during his two seasons at LSU, and earned the victory in the winner-take-all National Championship Series game against Florida in 2023. The junior struggled at times this past season, posting a 3-4 record and a 6.55 ERA.

Fellow Tiger Griffin Herring (LHP) was also taken by the Yankee in the sixth round (181st pick).

Herring, who pitched 50.1 innings for LSU this past season, was a second-team All-American in his sophomore campaign.

LSU relief pitcher Fidel Ulloa also went off the board Monday, being selected with the 198th overall pick by the Colorado Rockies.

All three pitchers would have eligibility remaining if they chose to return to college.

DALLAS — LSU head coach Brian Kelly exuded confidence Monday in the changes his team has made in the off-season, particularly remedying last year's underwhelming defensive performance and naming Garrett Nussmeier as starting quarterback following the departure of Heisman winner Jayden Daniels.

Kelly said as the 2024 SEC Media Days opened that the team made wholesale changes to the defensive coaching staff after a 10-3 season. Kelly pointed to the Sept. 30 game against Ole Miss — a 55-49 loss — as a flashpoint for the issues the defense was facing. The Tigers gave up 21 points in the fourth quarter.

"It really was indicative of what our problems were," Kelly said. "That game cost us a chance at being in the playoffs."

The Tigers hope to begin a 2024 playoff run in their season-opener Sept. 1 against Southern California. The game will be televised on WBRZ.

LSU's new staff includes defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who previously served as Missouri's DC and LSU's linebacker coach, and defensive line coach Bo Davis, who the Tigers poached from Texas. The new staff is a major investment for the Tigers, with Baker becoming the highest-paid assistant coach in the nation and Davis being among the highest-paid non-coordinators in the country.

On the other side of the ball, Kelly spoke fondly of Nussmeier and tight end Mason Taylor as successors to the rock star offense led by Daniels. Kelly said he's confident in Nussmeier "being the guy" after he spent multiple seasons studying Daniels.

"He knows the offense, he knows the structure. He's been immersed in everything that we've done...He's been patient but persistent," Kelly said. "When you're handing off to a quarterback that you have felt all along could lead you to a championship as well, it's probably as comforting you can be as a head coach when you lose your Heisman Trophy winner ... in turning the keys over the Garrett Nussmeier."

Nussmeier, who attended the media event with Taylor and linebacker Harold Perkins Jr., said that despite losing key targets like Malik Nabers, the receiving corps is still top-notch going into the season.

"Our receiver group as a unit has really stepped up. They understand the standard that they're gonna be held to, being a receiver at LSU," Nussmeier said. "You look at the history of LSU receivers, it's special."

Taylor will also be a focus of the Tigers' offense during Kelly's third season as head coach. Kelly emphasized Taylor's off-the-field leadership.

Kelly also said that Perkins will become a crucial part of the newly revitalized defense, allowing him to "play from tackle to tackle."

"We'll be able to move him around at situational times," Kelly said. "We're gonna ask him to do that and I think he feels really good about that."

LSU's season-opener against USC will be played at Las Vegas.

PRIDE - The Northeast High School football team is coming off a 2-8 season, but coach Devyn Baker believes this year his group of guys can turn the corner.
The Vikings return 14 starters, and much of their production will come from sophomores and juniors.
Coach is excited about Alex Curvin and Tyler Johnson, calling the two the team's workhorses.
Johnson will play safety, wide receiver, and return kicks while Curvin will be a strong defensive end/linebacker and tight end.
Jordan Sampson will be back at quarterback as long as he can stay healthy. It's a good thing the Northeast can protect him with five returning offensive lineman.
“The strength will be the O-line and D-line only because they've been together since the eighth-grade year, which was my first year, and they've been through the fire with us, so I believe that offensive line, D-line, will be the strongest point of our team this year,” said Baker. “It's extremely important to everything you do offensively and defensively because you got to think everything you know starts with the trench dogs, everything starts and stops up front. And so, with that experience, I think we should be able to move the ball well this year and hopefully be able to stop some people on defense.”
“The offensive inexperience will be our receiving corps, it's a lot of new faces, young guys, but new faces, and then on the flip side of that, and the secondary, outside of Tyler Johnson, the secondary will be a lot of new faces as well,” Baker said.
The goal for the Vikings this year is to get to a .500 record and earn a playoff berth.

Carlos Alcaraz tops Novak Djokovic in a second consecutive Wimbledon final for a fourth Slam title https://www.wbrz.com/news/carlos-alcaraz-tops-novak-djokovic-in-a-second-consecutive-wimbledon-final-for-a-fourth-slam-title/ https://www.wbrz.com/news/carlos-alcaraz-tops-novak-djokovic-in-a-second-consecutive-wimbledon-final-for-a-fourth-slam-title/ Sports Sun, 14 Jul 2024 10:54:41 AM Associated Press Carlos Alcaraz tops Novak Djokovic in a second consecutive Wimbledon final for a fourth Slam title

LONDON (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the Wimbledon men’s final Sunday to collect his fourth Grand Slam title at age 21.

It was a rematch of last year’s championship match on the grass of the All England Club, which Alcaraz won in five sets.

This one — played in front of a Centre Court crowd that included Kate, the Princess of Wales, in a rare public appearance since announcing she has cancer — was much easier for Alcaraz, at least until he stumbled while holding three match points as he served for the victory at 5-4 in the third set.

Still, Alcaraz regrouped and eventually picked up a second major trophy in a row after last month’s triumph on the clay at the French Open.

The Spaniard won his first Slam title at the 2022 U.S. Open as a teenager, and no man ever has collected more Slam hardware before turning 22 than he has.

He improved to 4-0 in major finals.

The 37-year-old Djokovic, wearing a gray sleeve on his surgically repaired right knee, was denied in his bid for an eighth Wimbledon title and record 25th major overall. He tore his meniscus at Roland Garros on June 3 and had an operation in Paris two days later.

Less than six weeks later, Djokovic was hardly at his best on Sunday — and Alcaraz certainly had something to do with that.

It was when Alcaraz was right on the brink of victory that things finally became a tad more intriguing, as some spectators offered chants of Djokovic’s two-syllable nickname — “No-le! No-le!” — while others replied with choruses of “Let’s go, Carlos! Let’s go!”

Alcaraz was up 5-4, 40-love in the third set when the occasion got the better of him. He frittered away his first championship point with a double-fault, beginning a run of five mistakes by him that donated points — and that game — to Djokovic. There was a backhand that went awry. A forehand volley. A forehand. Another forehand. That was the only time all match that Djokovic broke Alcaraz.

Suddenly, it was 5-all. Suddenly, Alcaraz appeared rattled. Suddenly, Djokovic could hope.

But in the ensuing tiebreaker, Alcaraz earned his fourth match point and stayed cool as can be this time. Soon he was climbing through the stands to hug his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, and others.

Just under 2 1/2 hours earlier, at the outset, the opening game appeared to portend an engrossing, back-and forth contest — and a long one, perhaps worrying some folks about getting to a pub or a couch in time to see England face Spain in the men’s soccer European Championship final in Germany on Sunday night. Alcaraz, of course, had a rooting interest.

All told, that game consisted of seven deuces and 20 points across a hair shy of 14 minutes, containing brilliant moments by both men. Sprinting, sliding, stretching defense by Djokovic. Return winners by Alcaraz. When he slapped a strong reply to a 125 mph (202 kph) serve and drew a wide forehand from Djokovic, Alcaraz cashed in his fifth break chance.

That, it turned out, was the most competitive portion of the proceedings until the third set.

Not to say there weren’t hints of brilliance the rest of the way. Just the outcome never really seemed in dispute.

BATON ROUGE - The Broadmoor High School football team went 1-9 last year, but head coach Yasin Sarah believes the Buccaneers are turning the corner.

Coach tells WBRZ the goal for this year’s team is making the playoffs, something the Bucs haven’t done in over a decade.

Broadmoor has 17 returning starters, and coach Sarah is starting to see a brotherhood within his team.

For the winning to happen in the difficult 4A District 6, all the players have to be on the same page.

“We do have a hard district, seven out of nine teams made the playoffs last year, so we understand that it's always an uphill battle, but we know that Broadmoor was big in the past,” Sarah said. “We’re getting a lot of old support coming in, we're getting a lot of those people that tell us all those stories about the eighties, nineties Broadmoor, and that's kind of we're trying to bring that Buc football back into it. So I feel like there's some good things coming out of Broadmoor, and I think people are recognizing it and hopefully we can serve that with the wins and losses.

Expect Brandon Thomas to get most of the reps at quarterback, with Kenneth Hawkins, who has some experience under center, playing both ways as an athlete.

Hawkins will be a part of a wide receiver group coach is really excited about.

On the offensive line though, the Buccaneers have some inexperience. Broadmoor has to replace three starters.

Broadmoor starts their season on September 6 at home against Ellender Memorial.

LIVONIA - The Livonia High School football team is coming off a couple of rough seasons, but with a new head coach at the helm, the Wildcats have a pep in their step.

Khalil Thomas takes over for Livonia. The former Catholic High and McNeese football player inherits a team that finished 2-8 last season.

Progress will have to start with more numbers. After finishing last season with around 20 kids, Thomas tells WBRZ the Wildcats have about 40 players right now.

Coach is also really excited about his wide receivers this fall, including Bo Stewart, Carmel Bourgeois, and Parris Hayes.

“We're going to spread it out a good bit, we believe we have a good group of receivers, about five to six of them that can really go get the football, and really make things happen in space for us,” said Thomas. “So we’re looking to spread it out a little bit, make kind of the pictures clear for our quarterback between our RPO game and really get after it.”

Senior Corey Parker will return to play quarterback, but Avery Bergeron might get some run as well under center.

On the defensive side of the ball, coach is excited about his linebackers, with returners Mario Acevedo and Jeadon Lathers expected to have big years.

On September 6, Livonia hosts East Jefferson to open up their season.

Baton Rouge - LSU tackle Emery Jones returned to Catholic High Thursday evening to host the first "Big 50" offensive and defensive line camp.

The camp hosted about 65 young athletes from 8-15 years old. The campers went through stations on Catholic's practice field to learn the fundamentals of being a lineman.

Jones even got LSU's entire offensive line room along with some coaches to help out and coach the camp.

The rain did delay the start of the camp, but that gave opportunity for Jones and his teammates to talk and get to know the kids on a personal level and share their wisdom about football with them.

Jones was very intentional with what he wanted his first camp to look like and what he wanted the athletes to get out of it.

"We want to show them competition honestly. A lot of kids come and we're bigger, you know, so we get tired and kind of 'alright I'm done,' but you want to show that you gotta push through it. We got a lot of stations here where we kind of let the kids, you know, get them a little tired. Let them get a little fatigued to kind of see how they react. You know, not getting them too tired to where they're dead tired, but just making them get tired to where they mentally have to be strong and mentally have to push through the stations, and the campers are doing really good with it actually," Jones said.

Now that the summer begins to wind down, Jones and his teammates will prepare for fall camp at LSU that begins in early August.

Baton Rouge - It wasn't that long ago that Lowell Narcisse was suiting up every week for a football game. He was a four star recruit out of St. James High School and went on to play at LSU and UTSA.

However, many injuries throughout his career forced him to retire from playing football. It was through being on the sidelines, coaching up his teammates that inspired Narcisse to get into coaching.

After spending two seasons at a Texas high school, he returned home to Louisiana to be the offensive coordinator at East Ascension. Shortly after being hired there, he was offered the head coaching job at Ascension Catholic High School. He says it was an opportunity that would've been hard to pass up.

"No matter how ready you feel you are, you never are, you know. There's just certain things that you're going to learn as you go on the journey. Just being organized and having the plan is the biggest thing, and everything else you can figure out along the way," Narcisse said about what he's learned since he's taken the job.

At just 25 years old, Narcisse is taking over the Bulldog's program and the adjustment for him and the team has been going smoothly.

"I tell them all the time that trust is truth over time, and I know it's going to take some time for those guys to get to where we want them to get. It's a learning process. We're still getting to learn each other as we go. How to communicate with those guys and how they want to communicate with me, but like I said, I think we're off to a right start," Narcisse said.

Narcisse is determined to create a culture that builds young athletes into better players and young men.

"My biggest thing is, it's not about like, the wins and losses are going to take care of itself, but how many boys are we creating into men. That's my biggest thing. How can I give those guys my life experiences for them to be successful in life," he added.

The Ascension Catholic Bulldogs will open their season with Lowell Narcisse at the helm on September 5th as they travel to face the H.L. Bourgeois Braves.

Baton Rouge - The Live Oak Eagles are turning a new leaf as they welcome first-year head coach Randell Legette to take charge after going 3-7 last season.

Legette served as Live Oak's offensive coordinator last season and has taken on the promotion within a program that has a strong number of returning starters. On the offensive side, they have two solid quarterbacks in sophomore Kingston Johnson and junior Cayden Jones. At running back, Legette says he has several players in the rotation and will make the decision on who the starter will be at the beginning of the season.

Coach Legette believes the seven returning starters on the defensive side, however, will be this team's biggest asset. Senior defensive ends Gabe Harvey and Jacob Cowart will be leaders on that front, and their experience could be a game-changer for the Eagles.

"Our front seven on defense, with that experience and their attention to detail and effort and things of that nature. I feel like that's definitely the strength of our team right now. I'll be happy for our guys to just do their jobs on a consistent basis, right, and when you're able to do that good things happen. We're not necessarily worried about the future or the end result, we just got to take it one task at a time," Legette said.

The Eagles will start their season on the road at Hunter Stadium on Friday, September 6 as they face the St. Paul's Wolves.

BATON ROUGE - The Scotlandville Hornets had a very uncharacteristic season in 2023 when they went 1-9 and got shut out twice.

In years past, the Hornets have been a team to look out for in 4-5A, and they're hoping to get back to that standard this upcoming season.

They return almost everyone offensively and new starting quarterback Genard Green got some varsity reps as a sophomore, so the experience is expected to be a major benefit.

Scotlandville has experience on offense, but not as many starters return defensively. They only have about two or three returning starters and many guys will play both sides of the ball this year. Running back Darren London will also play middle linebacker and wide receiver Ferzell Shepard Jr. will also play corner back amongst others.

Head Coach Ryan Cook believes that the team being so young was a contributor to their lack luster season in 2023.However, he believes the Hornets have the right coaching staff and the right building blocks to get back to being a competitive program.

"I think we can kind of return to hopefully being that Scotlandville team that people are used to in the past, in history. Our standards are pretty high at Scotlandville. So what we want to do is try to take this rebuilding process and move forward with it. Last year wasn't one of those years that people are used to, so we definitely as the players have that on our back right now. We just got to continue to work, push and fight. Our district doesn't make it any easier with our schedule, but that's what we're here for. We're here to compete and I'm just here to watch these young men grow on and off the field," Cook said.

The Hornets open their season on the road facing the Kennedy Cougars in New Orleans on September 6.

Gregg Berhalter fired as U.S. men's soccer coach after Copa America first-round exit https://www.wbrz.com/news/gregg-berhalter-fired-as-u-s-men-s-soccer-coach-after-copa-america-first-round-exit/ https://www.wbrz.com/news/gregg-berhalter-fired-as-u-s-men-s-soccer-coach-after-copa-america-first-round-exit/ Sports Wed, 10 Jul 2024 6:32:12 PM Associated Press Gregg Berhalter fired as U.S. men's soccer coach after Copa America first-round exit

NEW YORK (AP) — Gregg Berhalter was fired as U.S. men’s soccer coach on Wednesday, nine days after his team’s first-round exit from the Copa America flamed doubts he was the right person to remain in charge for the 2026 World Cup.

Berhalter’s second term as coach was cut short 10 months after he returned to the bench with high hopes and proclaimed the team’s goal was “to change soccer in America forever.” The U.S. had seven wins, six losses and one draw in his second stint, leaving his overall record at 44 wins, 17 losses and 13 draws.

“The Copa America result is extremely disappointing and I take full responsibility for our performance,” Berhalter said in a statement. “Our approach and process was always focused on the 2026 World Cup and I remain confident that this group will be one of the great stories in 2026.”

The U.S. opened with a 2-0 win to Bolivia, then lost 2-1 to Panama and 1-0 to Uruguay.

Sporting director Matt Crocker rehired Berhalter and also will make the recommendation on his replacement. The team next plays in September friendlies against Canada and New Zealand.

USSF spokesman Neil Buethe would not make Crocker available to answer questions from The Associated Press.

“Our immediate focus is on finding a coach who can maximize our potential as we continue to prepare for the 2026 World Cup, and we have already begun our search process,” Crocker said in a statement.

USSF president Cindy Parlow Cone also issued a statement. She did not immediately respond to a text message seeking additional comment.

Jürgen Klopp, Thierry Henry and Marcelo Bielsa are among those being speculated about as candidates to replace Berhalter, along with Jesse Marsch, Hugo Pérez, Pellegrino Matarazzo, David Wagner, Steve Cherundolo, Jim Curtain, Massimiliano Allegri and Mauricio Pochettino.

Salary could be an issue.

Berhalter earned $2,291,136 in 2022, including $900,000 in bonuses for the Americans qualifying for the World Cup and reaching the second round. A top-level men’s coach could put pressure on the USSF to increase the salary of newly hired women’s coach Emma Hayes.

Just 23 months remain before the World Cup comes to the United States for the second time and the Americans play their opener at Inglewood, California, on June 12, 2026. The only competitive matches with the full player pool before then likely will be in the CONCACAF Nations League.

Berhalter, who turns 51 on Aug. 1, was the first American to coach the national team after playing for the team at a World Cup. He was hired to coach the U.S. in December 2018 after stints with Sweden’s Hammarby (2011-13) and Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew (2013-18).

“I want to thank the U.S. Soccer Federation for entrusting me to lead this team for the past five years,” Berhalter said. “Representing our country is a tremendous honor and I am proud of the identity we have built on and off the field. It was very gratifying watching this team improve over the years and I remain grateful for the lifetime bonds created with our players, coaches, and staff members.”

He led the U.S. to titles in the CONCACAF Nations League in 2020, 2023 and 2024 and to another with a B team in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. His players strongly supported Berhalter, saying he fostered a culture that bound the group.

That support led to Crocker rehiring Berhalter five months after his initial contract expired amid an investigation of a decades-old domestic violence allegation that was brought to the USSF’s attention by the Reyna family, which was upset that Berhalter limited Gio Reyna’s playing time at the World Cup. A law firm retained by the USSF said there was no legal obstacle to bringing Berhalter back.

His detractors cited lack of success against teams outside the region and struggles on the road against Central American rivals. The U.S. gained the region’s final automatic World Cup berth on goal difference, and it had the second-youngest team at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The U.S. wasted a second-half lead in a 1-1 draw with Wales, tied England 0-0 and defeated Iran 1-0 to reach the knockout stage, where the Americans played poorly in a 3-1 loss to the Netherlands.

Players exhibited a lack of discipline: Defender Sergiño Dest got a red card last November at Trinidad and Tobago for arguing with a referee and winger Tim Weah was ejected from the Panama match for punching an opponent on the head.

“Gregg has earned the respect of everyone within our organization and has played a pivotal role in bringing together a young team and moving the program forward,” Crocker said in his statement.

U.S. coaches have not fared well in a second cycle.

Bruce Arena led the team to a quarterfinal appearance in 2002, its best since 1930, then failed to advance past the group stage in 2006.

Bob Bradley’s team reached the second round in 2010, earning him a four-year contract extension only for the USSF to fire him 11 months later after the Americans wasted a two-goal lead and lost to Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final.

Jurgen Klinsmann replaced him and led the team to the second round of the 2014 World Cup, then was fired after opening the final round of 2018 qualifying with a 2-1 home loss to Mexico and a 4-0 defeat at Costa Rica. Arena returned and the U.S. lost at Trinidad and Tobago on the final day of qualifying, ending a run of seven straight World Cup appearances.

While the new coach inherits players such as Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams who have thrived with European clubs, goalkeepers Matt Turner and Ethan Horvath and Reyna have failed to gain playing time with first-tier teams.

Ex-NBA player Jontay Porter pleads guilty in case tied to gambling scandal that tanked his career https://www.wbrz.com/news/ex-nba-player-jontay-porter-pleads-guilty-in-case-tied-to-gambling-scandal-that-tanked-his-career/ https://www.wbrz.com/news/ex-nba-player-jontay-porter-pleads-guilty-in-case-tied-to-gambling-scandal-that-tanked-his-career/ Sports Wed, 10 Jul 2024 3:09:21 PM Associated Press Ex-NBA player Jontay Porter pleads guilty in case tied to gambling scandal that tanked his career

NEW YORK (AP) — Former NBA player Jontay Porter on Wednesday pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a federal criminal case tied to the betting scandal that got him banned from the league earlier this year.

The former Toronto Raptors center entered the plea at his arraignment in a New York federal court and was set to be released on a bond of $250,000.

His lawyer had previously said that Porter was cooperating with authorities while being treated for a gambling addiction.

Court papers showed the case against Porter is related to an ongoing prosecution of four other men. The four have been arraigned on a charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud but haven’t yet entered any pleas.

Those men are charged with scheming to profit off tips from an NBA player that he was going to exit two games early. They or their relatives used the knowledge to place big-winning bets that the athlete would do poorly in those games, according to a court complaint filed when they were charged in June.

The complaint didn’t name the player, but details matched up with an NBA investigation that spurred Porter’s banishment from the league this spring. The league found that he gambled on NBA games and gave bettors confidential information about his health.

In court Wednesday, Porter said he agreed to withdraw early from games to get out from under large gambling debts so he and co-conspirators could win bets on his performance. “I know what I did was wrong, unlawful, and I am deeply sorry,” he said.

Porter is set to be sentenced Dec. 18. He could face from just under three and a half years in prison to a little over four years. He’s also likely to be assessed hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution, plus potential fines.

According to the complaint, one of the four men pressed the player to clear up gambling debts by prematurely pulling out of games so that bets on him underperforming would pay off.

In a message responding to the man’s instructions, the player wrote that if he didn’t carry out the plan, “u hate me and if I don’t get u 8k by Friday you’re coming to Toronto to beat me up.”

After tipping off some of the men, the player claimed injury or illness and withdrew from Jan. 26 and March 20 games after only minutes on the court, the complaint said.

Porter played only briefly on those dates before complaining he was hurt or sick and exiting the games. His points, rebounds and assists in both games fell below sportsbooks’ expectations.

After the NBA and others began investigating, the player messaged some of the men that they “might just get hit w a rico,” an apparent reference to the common acronym for a federal racketeering charge, according to the complaint against them. It said the player also asked the men whether they had deleted “all the stuff” from their phones.

The NBA’s probe found that Porter not only exited at least one game for gamblers’ sake but also wagered on NBA games in which he didn’t play. He once bet against his own team, the league said.

Porter averaged 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 26 games this season, including five starts. He also played in 11 games for the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2020-21 season.

The 24-year-old’s NBA salary was about $410,000.

Angel Reese extends consecutive double-double streak to 14 with Chicago Sky's victory over Dream https://www.wbrz.com/news/angel-reese-extends-consecutive-double-double-streak-to-14-with-chicago-sky-s-victory-over-dream/ https://www.wbrz.com/news/angel-reese-extends-consecutive-double-double-streak-to-14-with-chicago-sky-s-victory-over-dream/ Sports Wed, 10 Jul 2024 1:12:16 PM WBRZ Staff Angel Reese extends consecutive double-double streak to 14 with Chicago Sky's victory over Dream

CHICAGO — Former LSU women's basketball star Angel Reese continues to make WNBA history after the Chicago Sky's victory over the Atlanta Dream pushed Reese to 14 consecutive double-doubles on Wednesday.

A pair of free throws with less than 10 seconds to go in the game helped Reese extend her streak of double-doubles—a game where a player reaches 10 or more in two of the statistical categories of points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.

Reese previously set the record with 10 consecutive double-doubles during a June 30 win over the Minnesota Lynx, beating Candace Parker's record of nine set in 2015.

Reese and the Sky beat the Dream 78-69. The Sky will play the New York Liberty on Thursday in the Barclays Center.
